The compatibility between Islam and liberal democracy remains a complex and contested issue across western countries. While many Muslims see no contradiction between democratic values and religious principles, the rise of political Islam and a string of terrorist atrocities carried out in the name of Islam suggest the issue may not be so straightforward.

In this event, a panel of expert speakers will discuss the compatibility between Islam and secular democracy, the challenges and tensions that may exist between the two – and how they might be overcome.

The event will be chaired by National Secular Society chief executive Stephen Evans and jointly hosted by the NSS and The Neem Tree – a forum for discussion and dialogue.

Speakers:

Mohammed Amin MBE – Chair, Islam & Liberty Network and Co-Chair of the Muslim Jewish Forum of Greater Manchester.

Dr. Taj Hargey – Provost of the Oxford Institute for British Islam.

Yasmin Rehman – Secularist, feminist, human rights activist, and CEO JUNO Women's Aid.

Shaykh Arif Hussain – Senior Lecturer and founder of the Al-Mahdi Institute in Birmingham.
