Hell Hath No Fury like Sister Silvia When She’s Scorned

A jealous nun allegedly set light to a priest's house and threatened to kill him with a machete after finding him bed with a another woman. Sister Silvia Gomes De Sousa, 39, went berserk when she caught her 70-year-old lover Father Carmelo Mantarro in the act, a court heard yesterday. She had to be restrained by passers-by.

The nun told the hearing: “I just flipped when I came to the house and found him in bed with another woman who is married. We had been together four years and I had even had two abortions because of him.”

Sister De Sousa — who is also Father Carmelo’s cleaner — was arrested after the attack in the sleepy village of Roccalumera, Sicily, and charged with arson and making threats to kill. The drama was the talk of the nation last night and dominated TV and radio news programmes. Judge Antonino Giacobello freed sister De Sousa, who showed the court love letters from the priest, on bail. Like all good soap operas, the case continues next month.
