University Secular Society Makes Waves

A motion to replace Christmas at the London School of Economics with “a much better sounding Pagan festival” was defeated last week after it was proposed by the L.S.E. Secular Society. Sam Burke, an executive officer for the LSE Catholic Society, said: “The secular society have illiberal and radical ambitions that threaten the freedom of expression which remains so fundamental to the character of the LSE.”

The debate followed a series of campaigns, thought to be controversial by some, by the secular society including calling on students to ‘de-baptise’ themselves.

Secularists are calling on the Education Secretary, Ed Balls, to crack down hard on the teaching of creationism in schools. The call comes in the light of a new survey from Teachers TV showing that 30% of teachers support the idea of creationism being given equivalent status to evolution.
