Wirral latest council to cut free transport to religious schools

Wirral council is the latest to make cuts to free transport for pupils attending religious schools.

The Council hopes that the plan will save it £1.4m. It will be presented for approval at the council's cabinet next Thursday, and will affect 800 children attending Catholic schools. The proposals have been consulted on and will come into effect in September 2014, although children already receiving free or subsidised transport will continue to benefit until they leave or change school.

Julia Hassall, director of children's services, said the changes are in line with other councils and added: "In developing these proposals we have focused on supporting the needs of children and young people, and creating a service which is tailored to meet those needs in a way which is fair and affordable."
