Education Bill Comes To Parliament – Please Write To Your MPThe Government’s controversial Education Bill has begun its progress through parliament, and the NSS is asking all readers of Newsline to contact their MP about it. The new Bill proposes to establish “Trust Schools” which would be financed by the state but which could be operated by individuals (including groups of parents) or organisations. This is seen by religious groups as an excellent opportunity to push to take over even more schools. It will present an opportunity for the creation of a hundred or more state-sponsored Muslim schools and many more by religious evangelists with agendas that are extreme and dangerous. It is important that MPs (particularly Labour MPs) are made aware that there is widespread unease about these plans. There are already threats of widespread rebellion from Labour back benchers who are alarmed to see that Mr Blair may be relying on the Tories to get these measures through. Please write to your MP explaining your objections to faith schools in principle and to these proposals in particular. Please do it as soon as possible, and let the NSS know of any response you get by sending it to: tas@secularism.org.uk Sign the online petition and open letter See also: |
