Coming Out as Atheist: Simon Heffer
The right-wing commentator Simon Heffer wrote in the Daily Telegraph on Wednesday: “In a hideous act of precocity, I saw as a child that, having tried as hard as I could, I could not believe in God. I greatly regret this, but, despite extensive reflection, I can see no reason after all these years to revise my view.”
However, Mr Heffer does go on to express regret at his lack of religion and thinks that Christianity is the best religion in the world and needs to be protected. He is one of those who imagine that religion is necessary to maintain social order and support moral precepts. Even though he admits he has to be a hypocrite to sustain this view.
