Church and StateReport on Church & State Presented By The National Secular SocietyThe below paper was presented to a private seminar hosted by the University College London Constitution Unit at on 11th and 12th July 2006. It was attended by principals from the Church of England (led by their constitutional expert the Bishop of Winchester Dr Michael Scott-Joynt), other religious groups, secularists and academe. A representative of No 10 Downing Street also attended. The Seminar was addressed by Lord (Douglas) Hurd of Westwell CH CBE PC.

The police must act against a Christian group using intimidation and bullying against bookshops and artists to attempt censorship of what it considers ‘blasphemous’ art, says the National Secular Society.

Secularists are calling on the Education Secretary, Ed Balls, to crack down hard on the teaching of creationism in schools. The call comes in the light of a new survey from Teachers TV showing that 30% of teachers support the idea of creationism being given equivalent status to evolution. |
